Project Support – Placer Dome
Situation
Placer Dome is one of the world’s largest and most successful gold mining companies. Based in Vancouver, Canada, the company has interests in 16 mining operations in seven countries and employs more than 13,000 people around the world.
Business Challenge
Implementing an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in any organization is a major undertaking. For Placer Dome this was compounded by the broad geographical reach of its mining operation. Managing the overall project and associated finances, schedules, resource utilization and scope of this large program was a major challenge. Placer looked to KLR to provide Project Controllers/Analysts to help manage this challenge.
Solution
KLR implemented Microsoft’s Enterprise Project Management (EPM) tool to support Placer in this effort. KLR also worked closely with Placer Dome project managers and financial managers to develop guidelines, processes and reports to support the project effort. This included the core project control functions of close tracking of vendor invoices, effort to complete major deliverables, along with cost and schedule variance calculations.
Results
KLR’s efforts provided senior management with the information needed to understand the status of the project and the financial positioning of the program investment.
