In this issue we're offering three articles on Business Analysis Requirements

Gathering Business Requirements

Author: Ken Robertson, MBA, PMP & Kevin Lennox

A critical element of any project is gathering the business requirements and creating a clear picture of what needs to be delivered. Project initiators generally have a clear view of the end goal, but rarely will have considered or understand all of the stakeholders specific requirements for the system being developed or purchased. Creating a complete set of requirements up front enables better planning, more accurate cost estimates, shorter delivery cycles and improves customer satisfaction and adoption of the final outcome. The seemingly simple task of gathering requirements must be done effectively or the entire project could be in trouble. This article will address some of the fundamental elements of gathering business requirements – though the concepts may seem simple, remember the importance of completing this task successfully.

Business Requirements Tools - Not Always the Answer

Author: Keith Gibson, PMP

It never ceases to amaze how frequently organizations focus on buying tools before they put the basics in place. Thinking that tools are the panacea for improving business analysis and systems development capabilities could be a costly and unrewarding experience, likened to shopping for expensive power tools before knowing what you’ll be building.

KLR News

KLR and Microsoft

KLR together with our partners Microsoft and Softchoice delivered a very successful and well received briefing entitled “Supercharge Project Team Performance” to 27 local business people. The presentation focused on showing how Microsoft’s Enterprise Project Management tools can help organizations transform their project management environment from silos of data to a collaborative structure. An overview of the features and functionality was delivered in a live systems environment and further explored more advanced topics such as configuration and administrative functions as well as discussed best practices for implementation. The presentation garnered top marks from most participants in the evaluations, and inspired several clients to move forward with Project Server. Microsoft has asked KLR to offer this briefing again. HOW ABOUT A LITTLE HUMOUR?.....

Truism’s for the Business Analyst:

  • The sooner you begin coding the later you finish.
  • I know that you believe that you understand what you think I said but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
  • A user will tell you anything you ask about, but nothing more.
  • If project content is allowed to change freely the rate of change will exceed the rate of progress.
  • If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.
  • We build systems like the Wright brothers built airplanes - build the whole thing, push it off a cliff, let it crash and start all over again (R.M. Graham).
